Abu Soma Development Company announced it will host the ‘Golf & Gourmet Week’ at The Cascades Golf Resort, Spa & Thalasso, in its flagship Red Sea resort Somabay, with the participation of 150 international golfers and 7 Michelin Star celebrity chefs, during the period from 20-27 February. During the event, Somabay will also host the final golf tournament reinforcing its position as one of the top 10 golf destinations out of 828 in Africa.
Ibrahim El Missiri, CEO of Abu Soma Development Company, said, “Located on a ten million square meter resort peninsula, Somabay features resort hotels and residential properties that largely target foreign clients as part of our role in supporting Egypt’s drive to encourage property exports. We are also keen on hosting sporting and entertainment events that prove that, with its unique location on the Red Sea coast, Somabay is well positioned as a top destination for global tourism.”
“We seek to position Somabay as a leading destination for golf worldwide, not only with the presence of world-class golf courses, but through upgrading the golf areas as well. In order to make golf go green, we use solar energy for seawater desalination in addition to applying smart irrigation systems to ensure minimum water consumption,” El Missiri added.
In 2019, the U.K.’s ‘The Sun’ newspaper said in a report that Somabay resort is the ‘top spot’ for golfers to hold global championships, aided by the stunning Red Sea coastline, thus becoming a spectacular backdrop for players to perform better; “who may be tempted to crack their tee shot over the water in search of the green.”
Seeking to further strengthen its position as a key destination for golf, Somabay announced earlier that they are beginning to construct a Tim Lobb designed driving range that consists of two grass tees at both ends which can hold 30 golfers each, as well as two practice bunkers and eight target greens, in addition to under cover practice, which is grassed with Pure Dynasty Paspalum.
Somabay also commenced the re-building and upgrade of the ‘Par 3 Academy’ course which will include floodlit golf. This upgrade will bring the Par 3 to life with a world class design from Tim Lobb, not only incorporating golf but also foot golf which is still new in Egypt. Furthermore, works commenced last October on the new 18-hole Tim Lobb course will range from 4,600 yards to 6,600 yards and will become a ‘resort’ style course that will certainly promote golf for families and vacationers.
