Grace Gealey EMPIRE

The new series

If you haven’t started watching FOX’s new drama Empire, then you should most definitely start right away! Created by Lee Daniels and Danny Strong, the new series is set in the world of hip-hop music, shedding light on all of its ups and downs, its feuds, and–of course–its drama. I spoke to Grace Gealey, whop lays Anika, the strong–and fabulous–head of A&R at Empire, as well as the love interest of Lucious Lyon, the company founder, played by Terrence Howard. She is definitely an incredible talent on the rise and–I would say–the next big thing!

How did you stumble upon acting? Was it something you always wanted to do?

It stumbled upon me. I always loved performing as a child and that passion only grew as time went on. I went to school to initially be a drama teacher. As I surrounded myself with theatre, I fell deep.

What do you think helped you land your role on Empire?

God. It’s really the only answer. Lee has a beautiful heart that is so receptive to light and one of the things I most admire about him is the fact that he plucks people out of obscurity and gives them a shot. Danny Strong is like that too. It’s so rare to find that in this industry. So I think that, coupled with God moving through him, allowed this to happen for me.

How did you come into contact with Lee Daniels?

He came into contact with me after casting sent him my audition.

I’m sure you’ve learned a lot on the set. What are some of the most important lessons you’re taking with you on your career path?

To be bold in your art. To trust yourself no matter what. To be kind to everyone–no matter their role.

Do you see yourself in the character you portray?

I see her desperation, hurt and feelings of betrayal. I see her love, commitment and determination. I see her talent, intelligence and elegance. The question is, do you see yourself in her? This is a good lesson for those who shift their focus on actions more than on the reasons behind the actions. Am I like Anika? No. But do I understand where she’s coming from? Absolutely.

The ratings for Empire have been incredible! In your opinion, what makes it so appealing to the viewers?

We speak in a diverse way to the human experience. More than likely, everyone can relate to an experience, character or situation that we have presented. We also promote a diverse cast which represents an accurate depiction of the nation’s demographic. Lastly, the element of music is such a great connector with the entire through line. I believe all of these things have something to do with it.

Do we ever find out how it all started between Lucious and Anika?

That would be an amazing story to tell, wouldn’t

it? They’ve been together for a number of years so there’s much history and dynamics between the two. Once upon a time, they were a great love story. There’s still room for that to be told.

How do you think the relationship between Lucious and Anika will develop? Will it take any turns that we should keep our eyes and ears open for?

It’s turning as we speak! Keep watching..

How is Anika managing to survive in this predominantly male industry?

She’s a bad-ass. She knows the history and dynamics of the music business and refuses to let that deter her from producing top-notch results.

Moving on to fashion. I’m absolutely in love with your character’s wardrobe! How do you feel about it?

Obsessed!

Any favorite looks?

I adore every one. But I really loved the deep V blue laced jumpsuit and the finger waves she rocked at the dinner table in Ep. 3. In the last episode, that silver/gray coat was one of my faves as well.

Does her wardrobe in any way match your own personal style?

Anika is ridiculously wealthy–I don’t have time to keep up with her wardrobe! I love sweats and sneakers most days. But whenever I go to events, I like to glam it up.

Are there any Empire surprises in store for us?

Now why would I ever want to spoil those for you…(winks)?
