The Hair Addict has been the pioneer of the natural hair movement in Egypt since their launch two years ago. During this short time, they have taken many initiatives to revolutionize this field in Egypt and The Middle East. Their latest initiative is hosting Lorraine Massey- the inventor of The Curly Girl Method to hold the very first CurlbyCurl & CG Method masterclass in the region. This anticipated event will take place on the 15th and 16th of April in Cairo, being open to participants from different countries and different levels of experience. This event inspired many hairdressers who love natural hair, as well as people without previous styling experience that will take the training and embark on their journeys as natural hair stylists.
For many years we were only familiar with getting our hair cut while it’s wet and wearing it whichever way it dries, even or uneven. The natural hair industry has grown so much in the recent past years and this was initiated by Lorraine Massey – a hair stylist that had unstoppable passion for natural hair. Lorraine Massey took the initiative and wrote a handbook explaining “The Curly Girl Method” where she advises curly girls to stay away from products that have certain ingredients and avoid some hair care practices that lead to further damage. With the great success of The Curly Girl Handbook, Lorraine started educating stylists on cutting natural hair curl by curl because one can have different curl patterns at the same time so each one needed special tending, hence the name “CurlbyCurl” was given to her classes.
When she was asked about how the CurlbyCurl method emerged, Lorraine explains her story…
“CurlbyCurl was created by accident when, at 16, I was the victim of an unfortunate hair massacre that took nearly 4 years to grow out. My very curly hair was cut wet & straight across. When it dried, one side reached my shoulders & the other side stopped at my chin. When I acknowledged the unevenness, the stylist answered: “Hey – it’s even when it’s wet.” I answered, “But I don’t wear my hair wet. And what is wet will eventually dry!” That was the moment it hit me; that cutting curly hair wet is like cutting it blindfolded. So, considering that curly hair has a natural transformative spring factor, a dramatic shape-shifting ability, and a dynamic response to nature, I created my CurlbyCurl method.
Curlbycurl is about responding to the hair rather than imposing on it. Respectfully cutting each curl dry and in a natural resting state & position. With this method, the whole experience of cutting Curls can become one of trust and creativity. So you and your curly client can see a tailored shape emerge as the cut is happening.
What you see is what it is!”
