An Emotional Haven

Coined in 1992, man caves are increasing in popularity by the day. You may wonder why, but it is statistically proven that partnerships, which offer “space,” are more successful. Unfortunately, no such term officially exists for women, and yet it is not uncommon for women to have their own designated room or space in the house

Whether you agree on the garage, extra room, the basement or the roof of your house, making a man cave available really has its plusses, since–by definition–it is a dedicated space in the house (or attached to the house) where a man can be alone and/or socialize with his friends.

After deciding on the location–and yes, both parties need to be in agreement about this–it is time to think of a theme. Most man caves go for movie and sports themes, and recently more music-related themes are being used. Now that that’s settled, it is time for the “it” items, which need to be in every man cave. First in line is the pool table. Why? Billiard rooms are usually male-dominant, or at least seem to be one of the more common locations chosen for male gatherings. Secondly, add a bar and mini fridge. For starters, a wooden, elegant bar, adds flair and luxury, while a mini fridge is vital for storing drinks and snacks; you do not want to be running to the kitchen every time you have “male” guests to entertain!

Next, do not forget to add an ultra-modern television. Opt for a sleek, modern flat screen and hang it up on a desired wall. Also, you might consider building it into a piece of furniture to add practicality and usability to the space. While you’re at it, why not consult with home theater experts to add an extra dash of luxury?

From computing gadgets to fishing ones–depending on your interests of course–feel free to indulge in nerdiness! Games are also important. From arcade games to board games, the sky’s the limit. Also, do not forget to include sports equipment to keep you fit. Think of smaller items, like dumbbells, a bench press, or a jumping rope, to keep you in shape…and in some cases…relieve stress when needed.

Why not add a desk? In some instances, man caves are also partially used as offices. Don’t forget to have some reading material lying around; sometimes you might just be in the mood for a good read. If you’re a coffee-lover, include a vintage coffee machine in your décor, to add flair and a sense of nostalgia to your cave.

When it comes to your overall décor, do avoid looking messy and opt for a more practical and comfortable environment; think “usability.” Add comfortable sofas, a cozy rug and a few touches of rustic, industrial or contemporary accents, depending on your personal taste. Speaking of sofas–or seating in general–there is a short list of “winners” in this category; the gold medal goes to the womb chair and ottoman by Eero Saarinen, silver goes to the ball chair by Eero Aarnio and the RAR Chair by Charles Eames is a proud winner of the bronze medal.

For an insured luxurious feel, choose dark wooden furniture to create a more old-fashion–yet timeless–spirit. Keep it fresh with some vintage wall décor, such as framed vintage ads or posters.

The most important thing to remember, is that this is a man’s true sanctuary, where he should surround himself with his most-treasured and loved items. Now, for you men out there, please bear in mind, that this cave should not be messy, remember the magic words “practical,” “usable,” “comfortable,” and while you’re at it, make sure you add a touch of flair to your unique space.
