International model Jessica Kahawaty spent yesterday at Helm Foundation learning about the struggles of disabled people and the kind of struggles they face on a daily basis. She was joined with Egyptian model Tara Emad and Egyptian singer Lara Scandar. The day started off with ambassadors of Helm Foundation sharing inspirational and heartwarming stories from their personal journeys with disability.

Following that, it was time for workshops where attendees were taught how to write a little in Braille and how to communicate using sign language. The program was then full of various activities, including wheelchair racing, a blindfold course, and a game where attendees tried to get dressed and apply nail polish using only one hand. Most attendees described all activities as rather difficult. After getting a glimpse of how tough life can be for a disabled person, all attendees sat with blindfolds in a dark room where a speaker took them through the typical thoughts and mind struggles they also have to battle.

“I’m so happy to be here at Helm Foundation. I’m meeting some incredible, inspiring people with special needs. The stories have truly been inspirational and I was very touched today. For real, if you want to visit this organization and see the wonderful and life-changing work that they do, I highly recommend it,” Kahawaty told us.

For those of you who don’t know Kahawaty, she is Lebanese Australian and is also known for her work as a lawyer, humanitarian and TV host. Talk about a quadruple threat! If that wasn’t enough to impress you, she’s won a number of beauty pageants so far: Miss World Australia 2012, Miss Lebanon Australia 2007, and Miss Lebanon Emigrant 2008 while representing Australia.
