A successful case of innovative and social development, Paper Tales from Haiti proves that value can be added using “things that don’t have value.”

By Hend Seif El Din

Paper Tales from Haiti is a collection of animals for home decoration, made in papier-mâché with comics stripes and literary texts, designed by Giulio Vinaccia and Regine Fabiousan Haitian designer, and produced by the Haitian group Caribbean Crafts (Port-au-Prince, about 400 craftsmen).

The basic idea of Paper Tales is to create objects that could be “read” like a cartoon and at the same time stimulated the imagination in the children’s rooms.

After having found tons of old French and American comics, thrown in a garbage dump in Port aux Prince, we decided to recycle this paper, creating all kinds of animals.
Each piece is unique, as it is made entirely by hand from a series of comic books ..

Founded in 1990 Caribbean Crafts promotes employment in Haiti by training unskilled, but highly gifted craftspeople. Under the role of Magalie Dresse, Haitian industrial engineer from 2006 started to work with Haitian and international designers, developingnew market outlets and product lines made from recycled materials like steel from used steel drums, paper from cement bags, glue from the starch of locally grown manioc, plastic bottles and gallon containers .
