Summer may be coming to an end, but that sun-kissed glow doesn’t have to fade with it. A tan, which is the skin’s natural defense mechanism against UV rays, is a beautiful reminder of long, sunny days. However, because our skin is constantly renewing itself, a tan will naturally begin to fade within 7-10 days. The good news is, with a little extra care and attention, you can make your golden hue last long after the season is over.
Here’s how to keep your tan from fading and maintain a healthy, radiant complexion:
1. Hydration is Key, Inside and Out
Dry skin is the enemy of a long-lasting tan. When your skin is dehydrated, it becomes flaky and can peel, causing your tan to fade unevenly and quickly. To combat this, a consistent hydration routine is essential.
- Moisturize Daily: Apply a rich, hydrating moisturizer to your entire body twice a day. Look for products containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, shea butter, aloe vera, or rich oils. Moisturizing helps to keep your skin supple and prevents the flaking that can cause your tan to disappear.

- Use Nourishing Shower Products: Choose a moisturizing shower cream or oil instead of a harsh, drying soap. This will help to lock in moisture and protect your tan.
4. Boost Your Glow with a Tanning Extender
If you’re looking for an easy way to maintain your color, a gradual self-tanner or tan-extending lotion can be your best friend.
- Gradual Self-Tanners: These lotions contain a small amount of DHA, which allows you to build and maintain a subtle tan over time. They are often applied like a regular body lotion, making them a convenient way to top up your glow every few days.
- Bronzing Serums and Powders: For a quick fix, use a bronzing serum on your face or a dusting of bronzing powder on areas the sun would naturally hit, like your forehead, cheekbones, and nose. This can instantly illuminate your complexion and make your tan appear more vibrant.
5. Enhance Your Tan from Within
What you eat can also influence the longevity and appearance of your tan.
- Eat Beta-Carotene Rich Foods: Foods high in beta-carotene—the pigment that gives some fruits and vegetables their red-orange color—can help to enhance your skin’s golden tone from the inside out. Incorporate foods like carrots, sweet potatoes, mangoes, apricots, and spinach into your diet.
- Stock Up on Antioxidants: Foods rich in antioxidants like vitamins C and E can help to protect your skin from the inside and keep it looking healthy and radiant.
