For the second time in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Spotify is revealing the top songs, artists, albums, and playlists that defined how 320 million people around the world listened to and discovered music. It has definitely been a year to remember — being physically apart for so long, yet somehow finding ways to come together as a resilient community. As 2020 comes to a close, Spotify looks back and celebrates the creators behind the music that kept fans going throughout a year that feels like forever. Whether it was to sing along or simply tune it all out, people kept listening and creators never missed a beat.

In Egypt, it was no other than trap star Wegz who took home the crown, while his song “Dorak Gai” was the most-streamed song in 2020. Globally, Latin music continues to go strong, with Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny becoming the most-streamed artist of 2020. When it comes to the most-streamed song of 2020, The Weeknd takes the cake with “Blinding Lights” .

So, what artists defined a year unlike any other? This year, Wegz claimed the spot of most-streamed artist in Egypt. It is the trap star’s first time to top Spotify’s Wrapped list, but it comes as no surprise as the 22-year old top performer has been blessing his fans with hits throughout the year. Wegz is also the only artist with five songs in the most-streamed songs category for this year.  The second-most-streamed artist is Amr Diab, aka Al Hadaba. This year, he dropped his album “Sahran” earning him the number one spot on Spotify’s list of most-streamed albums in Egypt.

K-pop’s powerhouse BTS took the third spot and are the first K-pop group to ever receive a Grammy Award nomination. BTS’ album MAP OF THE SOUL: 7  also had a stellar year landing a slot in the most-streamed albums category, once again proving the popularity of K-pop in Egypt. Travis Scott comes fourth, followed by Abyusif who continues to leave a huge mark on the hip-hop scene with his ground-breaking collaborations.

The second most-streamed song of 2020 is Wegz’s “Wahd Wa Eshrin”. In the third and fourth spots respectively, are Marwan Moussa’s “Sheraton” and Wegz’s “El Ghasala”. Coming in fifth is “Dance Monkey” by Tones and I. The Weeknd’s “After Hours” comes in second as the most-streamed album right after Amr Diab’s “Sahran”. “Kol Yom Men Dah” by Hamaki comes in third, followed by “?” by the late rapper XXXTENTACION and Billie Eilish’s “WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?”.

The most listened-to female artists in Egypt are topped by Billie Eilish, Halsey, Sia, Dua Lipa and Sherine. Regional legend Fairuz comes in at eighth place. When looking at Spotify editorial playlists, Today’s Top Egyptian Hits is the most popular playlist this year. Spotify also found that Wednesday, 2nd of September 2020 was the most musical day of this year for Egypt.
