After breaking box office records in 2009, many are anticipating the release of the sequel to the legendary movie Avatar.

According to James Cameron, writer and director of the films, after it’s initial success Avatar was originally set to have five parts. However, with a growing Disney empire, Cameron has pushed back the last two until assessing the success of parts two and three.

Despite the story being completely under wraps, Cameron has allowed some exciting information to leak through.

For starters the cast is made up of most of the original actors from the first film. Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Joel David Moore, and Giovanni Ribisi are all back to reprise their roles. Surprising returning actors are also Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang who’s characters both died in the first movie. It will definitely be interesting to see how they play out into the story.

New characters are also being introduced adding Game of Throne’s Oona Chaplin as Verang, Harry Potter’s David Thewlis as Peylak, and Fear the Walking Dead’s Cliff Curtis as Tonowari, a leader of the reef people. Kate Winslet is also going to be in the movie playing Ronal, a cliff diver, that is, according to the actress, “a pivotal role” that she is very excited about.

As for the story, again most of it has remained a secret, but Cameron has let slip some general points about what the three parts will entail overall. According to Cameron, the films are set to be a generational family saga that will follow the lives of Sully, Neytiri and their children. Even more enticing, the villain in the movies is apparently going to remain Lang’s Miles Quaritch. As for the sequel itself it is rumored to focus more on the oceans of Pandora and tribes they hold.

Avatar 2’s release date has also finally been confirmed. After being promised back in 2014, then 2015, then 2016 and so on, the movie almost became an urban legend. Now it is finally a reality being released on December 18th, 2020.
