Egypt’s leading jewellery House, Azza Fahmy, joins forces with Washington DC based Syra Arts, the distinguished ‘go to’ art company dedicated to promoting contemporary art from the Middle East to an international audience.  The partnership enhances the theatre experience as it marks the premiere of the stage production of ‘The Band’s Visit’ at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre for one night only with a specially curated jewellery presentation from the Azza Fahmy Suma collection in tribute to the work of iconic singer, songwriter and film actress, Umm Kalthoum that features in the play.

Adding a glittering performance of their own the collaboration will create visual theatre as they step out in New York’s glamorous theatre district with a gallery display of jewellery pieces at the theatre on premiere night.  Designed to reflect the legendary Umm Kalthoum’s persona and her jewellery items, the statement pieces in18ct gold and sterling silver pieces engraved with narratives also honour the poets and composers behind the music of the Egyptian legend.

‘The Band’s Visit’ tells the story of an Egyptian Police Band that was sent to a remote village in the middle of the Palestinian desert. Under the spell of the desert sky, their lives become intertwined in the most unexpected ways. Nostalgic Arabic songs, including the notable work of Umm Kalthoum, became their way of communication as strangers to this village. ‘The Band’s Visit’ opened for critics on October 7th 2017 and opens to the public on November 9th 2017 running until April 2018.

Renowned for translating cultural and historic references to modern contemporary jewellery, Azza Fahmy was the perfectly placed to be selected as a partner by Syra Arts, to creatively bring this inspiring artist to a modern audience via the Suma jewellery collection while bringing a further artistic dimension to the fashionable theatre experience.
