Wadi Degla Player and World Champion Raneem El Welily Wins Her Debut US Open Championship

Wadi Degla squash champion, World champion of 2017, and holder of No.2 worldwide title according to the PSA ranking, Raneem El Welily seized the US Open 2018 championship. El-Welily managed to snatch the championship’s title for the US Open 2018 by defeating the World No. 1 champion, Nour El Sherbini by a solid 3-0 win with a breakdown of 11-6, 11-9, and 11-8.

“Winning this championship is a major milestone in my career. I have been working hard and prepared myself with utmost dedication before the championship. The support and guidance I received from the honorable Wadi Degla Clubs and inspirational Captain Karim Darwish has encouraged me to work harder and accomplish this dream”, stated El-Welily.

El-Welily is the first Egyptian woman to hold the 1st ranking worldwide in an individual game in September 2015. At the same time, she held 1st place in the Shanghai Open 2015 by beating the former Malaysian World Champion Nicole David. In 2017, she became World Champion No. 2, while in 2018, she achieved several titles such as: World Women’s Teams Champion and the First Egyptian Female to win Al-Ahram International Championship 2016. Additionally, she ranked first place in China Open 2018 and Gouna Squash Open 2018.

Egyptians have paved the way for dominance over squash worldwide with 8 constituted places of the top seeds in the US Open 2018 which took place in Philadelphia, US, from the 6th of October with total prizes worth $338,000.
