Studio Floris Wubben’s Latest Iconic Creations

Winner of the prestigious Belgian Ecodesign award in 2007, the Dutch company Studio Floris Wubben’s designs are true sculptural objects–and are naturally viewed as such. The company strives to shed new light and perspective onto known materials, which leads to new purposes arising naturally. With a focus on erasing prejudices and on giving materials a new face, their designs enable furniture and nature to co-exist and co-operate, leading to ultimate harmony.

T he living qualities of nature constantly influence their projects, trying to apply nature the way it is given in its purest form. The end result is thus a transformation of a part of nature into an artistic sculpture without loosing respect for nature itself.

The Studio Floris Wubben’s latest accomplishment is the sculptural “Potato Family.” The Potato Family design is inspired by the chestnut and potato figures created by many during their childhood. The construction of these figures is one of the first moments in which a child experiences a material creative process. This playful way of creating something has inspired Floris Wubben for this series of shelving units. One can see it expressed in many details of the design as, for instance, the position of the legs and the dynamic shape of each cavity.

The shelving units are made out of wood–a material that offers many creative possibilities–just like chestnuts and potatoes do for children. Regarding the details of the chosen materials, Dutch Fir tree wood was used for the shapes and the legs were made of polished stainless steel.

The Potato Family shelving units were constructed in collaboration with artist Bauke Fokkema.
