Mulan Live Action Remake to Hit Theatres 2020

The first official teaser trailer for the live action remake of Disney’sMulan was recently released, along with some information on what the movie will entail. The movie is going to star Chinese actress and singer Yifei Liu and overall have a cast of actors and actresses that are all fully of Chinese descent. The cast includes famous icons, such as martial arts specialist Jet Li and Gong Li from Memoirs of a Geisha.

From the trailer we can already see that this version is going to be a derivative of the animated classic than an exact remake, seemingly taking a darker more serious tone. While the core of the story is said to remain the same, the villain, love-interest and family members in the new Mulan are all changing.

Instead of the Hun leader Shan-Yu, the main villain is set to be a witch played by Gong Li.

The love interest Shang has also been replaced with a soldier named Bori Khan who becomes Mulan’s ally. Khan is to be played by Jason Scott Lee, an actor who happened to voice David Kawena in Disney’s Lilo & Stitch. Finally, there is the addition of a sister to Mulan’s family named Hua Xiu, who will be played by Xana Tang. The addition will definitely add more layers and motivation to Mulan’s decision to join the army.

Khan is to be played by Jason Scott Lee, an actor who happened to voice David Kawena in Disney’s Lilo & Stitch. Finally, there is the addition of a sister to Mulan’s family named Hua Xiu, who will be played by Xana Tang. The addition will definitely add more layers and motivation to Mulan’s decision to join the army.

Luckily, the movie is still set to include Mushu, the guardian dragon to Mulan, who was voiced by Eddie Murphy. Even though there is no sight of him in the trailers, sources had confirmed his presence in the film, however, they did not reveal in what form nor to what degree. What we do know is that Eddie Murphy is sadly not reprising his role.

With all these changes, there is no doubt that this remake will be something of its own rather than just a remake. There is great joy in the fact that this movie set in China is to have a fully authentic Chinese cast. The live action remake of Mulan is set to be released on March 27^th 2020 and is looking to be a film that will fail to disappoint.
