Golden Globes 2020: Highlights and Winners

By  |

Unless you’re living under a rock, you know that the 77th Golden Globe Awards were presented yesterday night. Hosted for the fifth time by Ricky Gervais, who by the way did a brilliant job, the ceremony took many different turns, from heavy humor to serious talks about climate change but it’s probably no surprise that our biggest highlight is Ramy Youssef winning best actor in a musical or comedy series for his stunning role in Ramy.

In a humble acceptance speech, Youssef said, “We made a very special show about an Arab Muslim family living in New Jersey, and this means a lot – to be recognized on this level.”

After roasting a couple of stars, Gervais ended his monologue speech by telling Hollywood off but we have to say it was actually quite refreshing. “If you win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech. You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg. So if you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent, and your god and f— off.”

Russell Crowe won the second award during the night for his role in The Loudest Voice but wasn’t there to accept it himself because he was home trying to protect his Nana Glen property near Coffs Harbour from the bushfires. Instead he delivered a message through Jennifer Aniston: “Make no mistake, the tragedy unfolding in Australia is climate-changed based. We need to act based on science, move our global workforce to renewable energy and respect our planet for the unique and amazing place it is.”

Without further ado, here is a roundup of the main award winners at the Golden Globes this year.
