A crucial juncture in my creative journey unfolded when I stumbled upon a Cairene tent maker skilled in hand appliqué work in 2017. Our spontaneous collaboration on personal creations, particularly whimsical tapestries, became an enriching experience. The fusion of my artistic background with the artisan’s meticulous craft brought forth a unique blend of cultural narratives and design elements. This encounter with a master of his craft not only expanded my artistic horizons but also ignited a passion for the intricate storytelling potential woven into each piece. The vibrant tapestries became a testament to the beauty that emerges when diverse artistic perspectives seamlessly intertwine.

While my work predominantly engages with ancient crafts, I acknowledge that there’s more to explore in the realm of technology. Although I haven’t fully delved into all its possibilities, I’m not opposed to it. Translating my designs into digital files is a crucial step in each project, bridging the gap between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary mediums. This integration serves as a thoughtful balance, preserving heritage while embracing the potential of modern technological avenues.

Your designs often convey a narrative or story. How important is storytelling in your design process, and can you share an example of a project where narrative played a pivotal role in shaping the final outcome?

Storytelling is central; it adds depth and emotional resonance to my designs. In a recent project, like the Oribe Holiday Collection, narrative played a pivotal role. This collection tells the story of haircare rituals in ancient Egypt through playful illustrations, echoing with our modern-day beauty rituals. It emphasizes the universality of haircare in human life, showcasing how storytelling can weave connections between ancient traditions and our contemporary experiences.

Design often involves a balance between aesthetics and functionality. How do you approach this balance in your projects?

In my design world, I lean towards whimsical ornamentation rather than strict functionality. I must admit, I’m not the most practical person. It’s a charming dance where aesthetics often steals the spotlight, adding a sprinkle of fantasy to my creations.

Working across multiple disciplines does bring its challenges. One significant hurdle is the temptation to control every detail. However, I’ve learned to embrace adaptation and letting go, allowing time for things to flourish. This flexibility allows me to navigate challenges, ensuring coherence and integrity in my projects. It’s a dance of balance where I find harmony by allowing each discipline to contribute its unique flavor while maintaining an overarching vision.

Art has the power to evoke emotions and provoke thoughts. How do you gauge the impact of your work on your audience?

While provoking thought and evoking diverse emotions are not my primary aims, fostering a connection that transcends the visual experience is fundamental. My intimate goal is to release thoughts, sublime burdens, alleviate fears, and share hope and love. However, the reception no longer belongs to me but to the viewers, creating a shared narrative born from personal interpretations.

Whether in my design process or lifestyle, I consistently strive to align with sustainable and environmentally responsible practices.
