This month we sat down with Egyptian interior designer, furniture designer, and all-around design guru – Rania Fahmy – the woman behind R’Kan (which translates to “corners’ in English) and R’Kan Edition – to discuss the term “functional art”, why she wants each piece in a home to have a relationship to its surroundings, and how (in her eyes), collaboration is the sincerest form of flattery.

“All my life, I’ve always loved art, interior design, and the craftsmanship of furniture. So this was the perfect way to showcase all of these passions, by bringing all of these artists together,” Fahmy explained. Rather than keeping all her creative ideas to herself, Fahmy reached out to artists, both local, and international, and suggested a creative collaborative project, in which limited edition, collectable furniture pieces are crafted together.

R’Kan Edition by Rania Fahmy, is a furniture line that blends art, culture, design, and functionality, all into one – coining the term “Functional Art”. The pieces range from chairs and consoles made in collaboration with artist Hady Boraey, cabinets and benches made alongside artist Karim Ataya, sideboards designed in collaboration with artist Maha Abdel Karim, signature chairs crafted together with artist Caroline de Souza, and many more.

Fahmy, who began as an interior designer – now provides interior design consultancy, in addition to furniture and art curation, through a personalized, one-of-a-kind client service – guiding her clients to create beautiful spaces that are unique to them. R’Kan Edition is a true testament to Fahmy’s passion for artistry and impeccable craftsmanship, how much she loves to tell a story with each piece, and her ability to truly think outside the box.
