Amidst the commercial trade region, it has become effortless to shop ready-to-wear garments, making the idea of finding a hand-crafted piece nearly outdated. Despite that, the fashion community is making a noticeable expansion nowadays, evident in the number of new brands selling agreeable, economical and personalized clothes in the current market. Alia Abaza is the one to look out for at the moment, helmed by hand-custom talent from an early age. We talked to her about her international brand and her establishment in the fashion market.
What made you interested in fashion design at first?
I would say it’s been in my genes since I was a little girl. I always loved art and creating things from scratch! It evolved more in highschool as I began creating my outfits and recreating anything I buy for myself. After graduating from college, I started taking this path more seriously and professionally.
How did the idea of your brand come into being?
I think my designs are a bit complicated. When I decided to launch my collection, I had this vision of mixing different styles, fabrics and cultures, even though I knew not everyone would absorb it. I think most of my ideas are inspired by beautiful fabrics that I outsource from different countries with very distinctive cultures.
You had your share in designing clothes, bags and numerous article pieces. Why did you choose to go versatile?
I have no rules when it comes to creativity.. Might as well indulge in all bits and pieces of fashion.
Do you prefer hand-made clothes over ready-to-wear?
Well, it’s a mix and match of both. However, I admit having a great passion for hand-made articles.
Your pieces are recognizable from the embroidery details to the cuts. How do you keep your identity intact?
Maybe if you knew me personally, you would understand because what you see is simply the expression of my personal identity. It shows in my designs, my house and in how I dress up – it is simply who I really am. Moreover, I’ve always believed that having and knowing your identity from the very beginning is one of the most important things for a brand.
What inspired your SOOCH collection?
The collection displayed in SOOCH is Spring/Summer 2020, not necessarily made for SOOCH. It was one of my favorite collections created. The highlight was tie-dye prints mixed with ethnic patterns. Many whites and creams. Tie-waist tops and dresses.
What do you have in store for the fall collection?
A killer denim collection. There are many challenges so fingers crossed!
Just for fun, what is your favorite trend this season?
I’m currently in love with chains.
