Without question, Sarah Fahmy is possibly one of our favorite designers in the Egyptian high-end fashion scene. We talked to her about her latest collection, La Sirène Guerrière, and her artistry when it comes to timeless dress details.
Tell us about the theme and vision behind your latest collection, La Sirène Guerrière.
Having a strong vision is the most important aspect in creating a timeless brand and a unique collection. In “La Sirène Guerrière” collection, I was inspired by the fantasy concept of “warrior mermaids”. They are fictional characters that portray fearless women – something that well represents the identity of Sarah Fahmy Designs.
What materials did you use in this collection?
I love using and mixing different materials that usually don’t go together then I blend them using my own vision and techniques. In this collection, I mainly used metallic and rigid materials mixed with ropes and a lot of handmade embroidery.
We love the intricate details on your designs. How do you pull them off while maintaining quality?
Thank you. We give extreme attention to details because quality is the most important element in our dresses. The dress has to fit perfectly on the client, and so we use the highest quality of fabrics and embellishments materials. We also have a very well-trained team that makes those dreams come true.
What does your creative process usually look like?
I don’t have a certain routine for my creative process. I can create anytime and anywhere. It’s my passion in life so it just kind of happens. However, creating a seasonal collection is different. I have to create my mood board according to various elements such as the current season’s Pantone colors and trends and then everything just follows.
How do you balance between following trends and standing out in the fashion field?
In my opinion, it’s more important to follow your identity than to follow trends blindly. Therefore, I take from the trends only what serves my brand’s vision, identity and aesthetic.
Where do you find your inspiration?
I find my inspiration everywhere but mainly in my thoughts. I have endless ideas that I can’t wait to bring to reality. Also, my mood plays a very important factor since I like to utilize my real feelings while sketching designs.
Do you have any international designers you look up to?
No one specific comes to mind but in general I appreciate all international designers who have a strong point of view and who give extreme attention to details, specifically those who have more of an architectural and geometrical aesthetic to their designs.
What have been your personal keys to success as a designer?
Mainly hard work, consistency and the determination to never give up. There’s also the lessons of following my own rules, and working on myself everyday to nourish, develop and learn new techniques.
Where do you see your brand in a few years?
I definitely see it growing bigger and expanding its international market.
