In the wake of Covid-19 pandemic, government officials, NGOs and business leaders have become aware of the need to join hands and forces to prevent the outbreak of the virus. Throughout the first quarter of 2020, we have seen several initiatives and steps taken from the private sector in order to support the government in containing the spread of the virus and offer the needed medical support to the affected individuals. Tatweer Misr, the leading real estate developer, is taking an active role to shoulder its corporate social responsibilities and employs all around measures to support the government in light of the current local and global situation. In this fight, Tatweer Misr will stand with other entities and authorities to face down the challenge together.

Abiding by WHO guidelines and with the announced decrees from the Egyptian government, Tatweer Misr was encouraged to implement internal and external strategies to mitigate the impact of the virus and its disruptions. The internal actions aimed for keeping their employees safe while ensuring ongoing business operations, so the steps were manifested in reducing the workforce by 50% in all of its construction sites, supplying their sites with all sanitary measures, medical units and doctors to ensure regular checkups for workers and offering remote working options for the office based employees to reduce the risk of infection.

Following the outbreak and after the announced precautionary measures that includes staying at home and following correct hygiene procedures to control the spread of the virus. Tatweer Misr realized that the lower socio-economic class in Egypt will be incapable of abiding and following these guidelines as they lack basic sanitary facilities at their homes which are also deteriorated, disabling them to lockdown. Moreover, the aforementioned group cannot afford a lockdown as breadwinners rely on daily income to sustain their families making lockdowns a driver to hunger.

As a result, the company launched their campaign “Benebny Hayah – Building Life’’ which had two main goals, the first is preventing the spread of the virus in collaboration with Al Orman NGO which included reconstructing and revamping homes in Kafr Abdel Khalek in Minya Governorate. By holding construction works, Tatweer Misr is able to supply houses in the village with waters systems as well as electricity enabling them to abide by the WHO’s safety measures of staying home, maintaining social distancing and washing hands regularly. Moreover, the company is supporting families who lived off daily income by providing families of the village with food products throughout Ramadan.

The second is supporting and empowering the healthcare system manifested in governmental and educational hospitals to fight the coronavirus by partnering with Ahl Masr Foundation as well as several other entities to provide them with medical supplies & equipment such as ventilators, monitors, syringe pumps and PPEs for the safety of doctors & nurses.

The coronavirus outbreak is first and foremost a human tragedy, affecting thousands of people. However, the company has a strong dedication towards its employees, clients and community. For this reason, several efforts have been taken to keep them safe yet, without discontinuing business activities that will reflect on the Egyptian economy.
