Jam-packed with iconic music moments, the 62nd Grammy Awards just commenced yesterday night. Taking place at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, the program featured some anticipated debuts and several tribute performances about Kobe Bryant’s sudden, tragic passing.
It started with Lizzo singing ‘Cuz I Love You’ and then ‘Truth Hurts’, which she followed by an opening statement for the night: “Tonight is for Kobe.” That’s when Alicia Keys, who was hosting the awards, took the stage to say, “Here we are together, on music’s biggest night, celebrating the artists that do it best but to be honest with you, we’re all feeling crazy sadness right now because earlier today, Los Angeles, America and the whole wide world lost a hero.” Boyz II Men then joined her to perform ‘It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye.’
On another emotional note, Camila Cabello came down a flight of stairs and sang ‘First Man’ to her father, Alejandro Cabello, while her childhood photos appeared on the screen. His reaction was special as he cried and hugged her after the performance. Most viewers said it resonated with them and reminded them of the Bryant family.
Performing his hit country trap song ‘Old Town Road’, Lil Nas X shared the stage with K-pop band BTS, Billy Ray Cyrus and 13-year-old Mason Ramsey for an epic performance. The beautiful merging of cultures and generations was one for the books.
Demi Lovato also debuted ‘Anyone’, the song she wrote only days before her overdose. In the middle of performing, Lovato choked up and then started singing again from the beginning, which got her a standing ovation from an understanding audience. This was also the first time for her to perform on stage since the overdose in 2018. Can you believe the extent to which this night was a rollercoaster?
Now, drumroll for the main awards… Don’t be surprised when you notice an obvious star among the winners at the Grammys this year.
