The Rug Company x Fashion Designer Mary Katrantzou

Set to launch in Autumn 2019, The Rug Company has collaborated with fashion designer Mary Katrantzou for a collection of striking rug designs.

As the daughter of an interior designer mother and a textile engineer father, Katrantzou has long been exposed to the world of interiors from a very early age. She studied textile design at Central Saint Martins, specializing in interiors, and then followed her bachelor’s degree with a Masters in fashion.

Last year, she celebrated her ten-year anniversary, having established a massive following for her artistic prints, digital craftsmanship and feminine silhouettes over the past decade. Her work has been featured in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Victorian Albert Museum, The Copper Hewitt Smithsonian Museum, The Barbican and many others.

The collection features seven uniquely vibrant rugs and represents Katrantzou’s first foray into the world of interiors. Each of the rugs is unmistakably Katrantzou, inspired by the bold and imaginative designs for which her eponymous brand is renowned. The rugs are inspired by Katrantzou’s past collections but also reimagined for this collaboration with a photographic quality.

The three blown-up floral designs from the collection: Bluebell Daydream, Garden of Eden and Botanical Paradise take cues from Katrantzou’s SS18 collection “Nostalgia” and specifically from childhood ‘paint by numbers’ books.

An exuberant rug with a unique touch of magical realism, Bluebell Daydream features amplified florals in a spectrum of blues and purples.

Garden of Eden reflects the mood of the collection with dramatic contrasts of soft blue and white flowers depicted in silk and wool. The layering of the highly detailed blooms on top of the black and white floral background lends it a three-dimensional quality and references the ‘paint by numbers’ art which inspired it.

An ode to femininity, Botanical Paradise features a hyper-real floral scene. Blown-up flowers are combined with a palette of deep and powder pinks and striking amaranth, which is contrasted with colorless white wool flowers for a dramatic effect.
