The famous German photographer Peter Lindbergh passed away at the age of 74. The artist was well known for his work in high fashion and credited with the rise of the supermodel and en vouge fashion photography. The news was revealed to the public via an Instagram post that said, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Lindbergh on September 3rd, 2019, at the age of 74. He is survived by his wife Petra, his first wife Astrid, his four sons Benjamin, Jérémy, Simon, Joseph and seven grandchildren. He leaves a big void.”
“Most of the fashion-related media today prefer to take away the identity and experiences of their protagonists – your poetry and all the small imperfections, the signs of your own life supposed to be there to tell you’re your story – and replace it with senseless perfection,”
- Peter Lindbergh.
The brilliant artist was best known for his work with supermodels and fashion magazines. In 1990, he shot a cover for British Vogue featuring Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz, Christy Turlington and Cindy Crawford that launched his career into the mainstream. Since then he has photographed the biggest names in fashion including Helen Mirren, Uma Thurman and Gigi Hadid. Known for his artistic imagery, Lindbergh was also outspoken on his stance regarding the re-touching of images. In his book, Shadows on the Wall he wrote, “It should be a duty for every photographer working today to use his creativity and influence to free women and everyone from the terror of youth and perfection.”
“There is something very beautiful and moving about bringing us all together in this way and photographing everybody in its own very natural simple form. Just completely stripped back and very much ourselves,” said Winslet.”If you look at the range in age of the women featured in this book, it’s just fantastic. You won’t see anyone altered digitally. We will all absolutely be the age that we are – and that’s very much his intention. Well, isn’t it ok to just be 40, or 50, or 60?”
- Kate Winslet, Le Touquet, 2015
“I think I know him so well so there is an enormous sense of trust involved and friendship there, and that’s very, very powerful and I would have felt incredibly shy if it was somebody else.”
- Nicole Kidman, Los Angeles, 2016
“There is nothing fake and that’s what he wants in his pictures, that’s what he captures, he’s so good in capturing the truth. The essence of a person, the essence of whatever is going on in this moment,” said Cruz. He’s always himself. If he’s talking to you, he’s just talking to you, and he has this internal rhythm that is very relaxing. He never seems stressed out!”
- Penélope Cruz, New York, 2016
