Netflix will be honoring Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, known simply as Selena, the American cultural icon with a new series about the singer’s life entitled Selena: The Series. Selena, was one of the biggest Latin crossover artists in the world and was at the top of the charts before her untimely death. The fashionista, feminist, queen of Tejano music, and pop-icon passed away 24 years ago, yet her memory still lives on in the lives and hearts of fans who have kept her legacy alive. In recent years MAC beauty released a Selena-inspired makeup line, she received a posthumous star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame and was the style inspiration for A-list celebs like Kim Kardashian, America Ferrera, and Demi Lovato.

Now, Netflix will be honoring the American cultural icon with a new series about the singer’s life entitled Selena: The Series. The 1990’s star was previously played in the 1997 movie, Selena by none other than Jennifer Lopez, a role that catapulted the proud Puerto Rican to international superstardom. Now, 28-year-old actress Christian Serratos will become the newest actress to depict Selena on screen to continue her legacy. Netflix says that the series is, “a coming of age story following Selena as her dreams come true and all the heart-wrenching and life-changing choices she and her family have to make as they navigate success, family and music.”

The Netflix show will be created in conjunction with the Quintanilla family and be released as a two-part limited series with a focus not only on the superstar, along with her family as well. Unlike the 1997 movie that focused mostly on Selena Quintanilla-Pérez’s rise to fame, the Netflix series will take a more detailed approach to tell her family’s story. In an interview about the series, producer Jaime Davila said, “Selena’s career achievements are legendary, but our scripted series will focus on the incredible story of a Mexican-American family and how an extraordinary young woman transcended categories and borders to become a global star.”

While many Generation Z fans will not know the story of Selena or remember many of her hit songs the Netflix series will introduce her to them and spark a new interest in her legacy. “Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel a great responsibility to do justice to her memory. With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives. We are excited to partner with Campanario and Netflix to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse at our story and highlight why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come,” said Suzette Quintanilla, Selena’s sister.
