Finally, it has been confirmed. Along with tons of other phase four releases, Marvel is finally giving us a Black Widow movie. Fans have been waiting for this movie ever since the release of Iron Man 2, where we were first introduced to Scarlett Johansson’s famed Russian spy. While the movie is still filming, the cast gathered at a panel to give us some details on the awaited film.
Thankfully, Scarlett Johansson will be returning to play her character Natasha Romanoff. Alongside her are beloved Stranger Things actor David Harbour playing the Russian version of Captain America called The Red Guardian and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, known to fans as the Other Black Widow and as a rival to Natasha. It also to be directed by Cate Shortland known for her previous film Berlin Syndrome and Lore.
As for what the movie entails, it is a prequel set before the events of Iron Man 2 and is rumored to finally show us the darker side of Natasha that we have only gotten hints of throughout the decade. As for the villain, fans are speculating from set photos that it may be Marvel’s Taskmaster, an assassin and antihero.
Black Widow is Marvels first introduced female superhero, so the question is why did they wait this long? According to producer Kevin Feige, he thought they needed to establish Natasha’s character before exploring her darker sides. Well after 10 years, Black Widow has finally developed enough for her own origin story. So, watch out for Marvel’s long-awaited release of Black Widow coming out on May 1st, 2020.
