Seriously, hats off to you if you’re in a long distance relationship. Given both the obvious and unforeseen challenges that may come your way, we really feel for you and this is our heartfelt attempt to stand in your corner. While every relationship is different, here are some tips we believe can help steer any long distance relationship.
Always keep in mind the time difference.
If you’re calling him really early or really late where he is, don’t be disappointed because he is not super talkative and full of energy “out of his love for you”. Be kind about these things.
Communicate in abundance.
Definitely go the extra mile in letting him know what’s going on with you. It’s not like he can see anything for himself. You might need to over-share even, especially if you’re the person who wouldn’t normally share unless asked or approached first. Let him know what’s on your mind and what’s happening around you so he has the invitation to be more involved in your life. Of course, encourage him to do vice versa.
Expect an inevitable clash in cultures and be open to learn about his community.
You will probably hit this wall sooner or later but that’s okay. For some couples, it can be minor issues like weird food indulgences and fashion styles but for others, it can affect the actual stages of their relationship.
In Middle Eastern culture, for example, people tend to get married quickly and there are certain expectations regarding proposals and weddings. This would possibly clash with European culture where relationships can remain casual for a much longer time and weddings are not always presumed to be a big extravaganza.
Be yourself when he’s visiting.
It’s very easy to get caught up in the fairytale when he comes to visit but avoid the temptation of even slight performance. Take a conscious decision to be yourself completely. He’s going to find out who you are eventually and you don’t want to waste time in the relationship by keeping him from really getting to know you.
Surprises go a long way. Something as small as a surprise gift drop-off will mean the world to him. Not only is it very intentional, but it’s also a tangible way of saying ‘I think about you’. Of course, if you plan a surprise visit that would outshine all romantic gestures you can think of.
