Customized Luxury at its Best

New York City has long been a favorite among international real estate moguls, and I can completely understand why. Most recently, the city has seen a considerable uptick in interest from buyers in the Middle East, which brings me to the most sough-after residences on the market today, The Centurion.  So what exactly makes this development so special?  Thomas Guss, one of NYC’s leading real estate brokers and the president of New York Residence tells FLAIR why The Centurion is currently making headlines.

What sets the Centurion apart from other developments?

The Centurion is the only condominium project ever designed by Pei Partnership Architects with I.M. Pei, the architect of the Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar and the Pyramid of the Louvre in Paris. I.M. Pei celebrates his 96th birthday this year. Located in the heart of Manhattan, the building is located near Central Park and next to Fifth Avenue, home to many of the world’s most exclusive luxury brands. Extremely safe and secure, many residents chose The Centurion both for its location and design as well as its staff which is available 24 hours. With only 48 important apartments, the building has a very private feel – and as a result it is currently the home of several members of the Fortune 400 list. The building offers the opportunity to combine its three penthouse suites into one massive “mansion in the sky” of nearly 10,000-square-feet. That opportunity, one of New York’s most outstanding residences, has received multiple offers in the $40 million range but is only available to the right buyer. This is not a property where you simply make an offer, get accepted and send a check. With such a wide range of customization options, from a private elevator to connect the three floors to a sweeping glass staircase, a restaurant-quality kitchen and four terraces, we want to be absolutely sure that the buyer appreciates and respects the sophisticated profile of the property.

How would you describe the architectural style of the apartments?

The style is elegant, timeless and references many of I.M.Pei’s best buildings. It shows a lifetime of sophistication and experience of one of the best architects of our time. The impeccable architectural pedigree becomes apparent the moment one steps into the lobby. The Pei ambiance is recognized throughout the world as elegant, tranquil, graceful and timeless. Each of these characteristics was painstakingly incorporated into the design of The Centurion through the selection of colors, materials and textures, all of which are of the highest quality.

Do all apartments follow the same style, or is each one different?

Each apartment is different – the 48 apartments at the Centurion have 32 different floor plans. Many units feature unique elements such as terraces or high ceilings. Choosing an apartment at the Centurion is an expression of individuality. Although the building is now over 80% sold, some of the best units are still available.

Can the spaces be customized?

Yes, unlike in many other high-end buildings in Manhattan, owners have access to a wide range of options to make an apartment truly their own. Sandi Pei of Pei Partnership Architects has agreed to personally assist buyers in customizing their apartments. In addition, experienced interior designers and, if needed, a full construction team are on hand to make an owner’s vision a reality. For international buyers, any customization can be coordinated by the Centurion on-site team.

Which companies worked together to make the Centurion a reality?

The building was designed by Pei Partnership Architects with I.M.Pei, built by renowned developer Stillman Development, financed by Green Investment Group and is marketed by high-end brokerage firm New York Residence.

Which colors dominate the development?

The soft natural colors of French limestone and teak wood.

Would you say that the Centurion has a “zen” feel to it?

Yes. I.M. Pei is known throughout the world for his tranquil and serene designs. The moment you step into the Centurion, the building evokes a calm feeling through the careful choice of materials, textures and colors. Additionally, several architectural elements deeply rooted in Asian tradition – such as the waterfall in the lobby – were integrated into the timeless design to contribute to the overall feeling of wellbeing for all residents. To create an oasis of serenity in the center of one of the world’s most vibrant cities is a remarkable achievement.

If you had to describe the Centurion in a few words, what would they be?

A made-to-measure-suit, available to few.
