Bringing Narratives to Life

Founded in 1997 by Thomas Cushing, the Libretto Group created Kate Spade’s first license, Kate Spade Paper.
Changing the direction of social stationary, the collection’s beautiful illustrations and fine leather goods used Kate’s signature fabrics and leathers.  Since then, the group has created several collections under license, for some of the world’s finest designers and brands, including Christian Lacroix Papier, the Victoria & Albert Museum, The New York Times, Lotta Jansdotter, and Orla Kiely Paper.

From department stores and museums to specialty retailers, Libretto products are sold all over the world.  Primary accounts in Europe include Liberty of London, Selfridges, Heals, Harrods, the V&A, and Le Bon Marché. In North America, accounts include Neiman Marcus and The Getty Museum.

In addition to its licensed collections, Libretto develops private label programes for leading fashion brands, such as Christian Louboutin, including notebooks, journals, and cards for the current exhibition at the Design Museum of London, in celebration of the designer’s 20th anniversary. The products are currently being used in Christian Louboutin retail stores as gifts-with-purchases.

Libretto’s guiding principle is that social stationery should be fun, inspiring and amusing, and that by working with leading designers, Libretto can create products that are as innovative and stylish as the finest fashion or industrial designs without being over-priced and elitist.
As digital devices, such as the iPhone and iPad, become more and more the norm, the traditional paper products Libretto produces, using fabrication techniques that are centuries old (gilding, embossing, flocking, die-cutting, pop-up), have suddenly become new and exotic. Though counter-intuitive, the more we spend our days in front of computer and communication screens, the more we desire products that are tactile, well-made, and artisanal, that show evidence of the human hand. We all need narratives in our lives, and the products Libretto makes tell stories that are at the same time both new and old.
