Welcome to the World of the Hunter

Roll neck sweaters have had quite of a bad reputation being associated with teachers, the uncool kid that wore them at school, bond villains all of whom made the very versatile and practical sweater anything but fashionable. Fortunately, the high neck sweater is back on the trendy scene and has been on the runways of the likes Tom Ford, Lanvin and Topman Designs. The roll neck sweaters come in different distinctive styles that could resonate with different types of men. Here are some looks to inspire you on how to rock the roll.

Chunky Knit Roll

The chunky knit roll is probably what would appeal to many. At the more casual side of things, it could be worn with jeans and topped with a jacket or coat if the weather calls for it. It retains a classic look and less adventurous but fashion forward none the less. Try a textured version of the knit or wear it in a bright striking color if you dare.

Layering Knitwear

Tom Ford and Jill Sander are two designers how have demonstrated this look on their runways this season, where basically it is layering knitwear over knitwear. For most men this idea might not be likely to occur to them, however if you want to create a more unique look you should start thinking outside the box. For a look that could be put together and professional, with slim fit tailored trousers, layer a fine knit roll neck sweater and top it with a crewneck sweater of the same thickness. For a more daring look go for chunkier knit or a sweater with pattern or motifs on top of a thin and neutral roll neck.

Roll Necks and Tailoring

One of the biggest trends this winter is replacing your old white shirt in favour of a lightweight roll neck sweater with a two-piece suit. Made popular once again by Tom Ford, who paired the roll necks in neutral shades like brown and soft grey with checked suiting.

Fine Knit Roll Necks under Shirts

Another way to make this look work, only taking it a step further is by layering the roll neck sweater under tailored shirts, suits and blazers. This season the biggest proponent to feature this look was Lanvin, where they also incorporated shots of bright colors such as white and mustard underneath the neutral shades of shirts. Try pairing a fine roll neck with some sharp tailoring for a slick formal statement.
