When it comes to interior designing, FLAIR absolutely loves Kelly Hoppen’s work. As for the 2013 trends to keep an eye out for, what better way to help you out than with Hoppen’s advice?
Generally speaking, Baroque minimalism is the trend of 2013, and yet there’s much more than goes into defining a trend than “just” an artistic movement.
The concept of Fluidity is one that is going to be big this year. Filled with Easter characteristics, we will be seeing a lot of moveable walls, à la Japanese design. Include them between your living room and your dining room, for example! They can be closed to offer more privacy, and opened to create a larger, more sociable space. As for screens, use them to create divisions in a room, providing you with the flexibility to transform spaces.
When it comes to fabrics and textures, the winter season is one of the most vital when it comes to the latter. New, cozy throws, comfy bedding, cushion covers, and sheepskin throws on the floor are a must. Also, do consider mixed textures, such as wool mixed with satin. We’ll also be seeing a lot of traditional fabrics in neutral colors; rugs with large bold stripes laced with the sharpness of ikat design, giving the pieces a Middle Eastern touch. Turkish, vintage velvet is also making a statement, mixed with soft fabrics, ensuring a very new look.
As for your walls, do consider painting them in one of the following colors: charcoal, mouse, white, black, and shades of grey.
Furniture trends are all about interesting combinations and contrasts in 2013. Staying true to retro and vintage-inspired pieces, this year will see them mixed with different finishes. Soft leather will also be contrasted with hard metal and wood for a softer finish on tables, chairs and shelves. Let’s not forget the amusing one off statement pieces, which will definitely add that extra “oomph” to your living space.
When it comes to windows, we will be seeing very large slatted lacquer shutters, a very Vietnamese statement look, never seen before.
As for bedrooms, walk-in closest and dressing rooms will be even bigger this year, because people want to maintain a harmonious bedroom environment more than ever!
The “social kitchen” is staying in this year, with open plan spaces for cooking, entertaining, and socializing, thanks to the continuous rise of the kitchen bar. The kitchens are mostly contemporary, opting for neutral soft colors. Do use different textures, materials, and finished on work surfaces. Also, kitchens with gourmet or built-in and concealed cooking features are a 2013 must-have.
This year, while choosing your art pieces focus on sculpture, photography, art deco tapestry, plinths in glass used to display sculptures, and consider displaying your carpets on the wall.
Last but not least, one of the less detail-oriented spaces in the house…the bathroom. This year, more attention is being paid to restrooms, and new textures, colors and tones are being brought in. For example, consider using chain main in the cupboard instead of “regular” doors. Also, bathroom taps will be simple, yet beautifully shaped.
